National Policy Statements (NPS) are produced by Government to give strategic guidance on major new infrastructure development.

The National Road and Rail Network NPS was published in December 2014.  While slightly better than its draft, which attracted a record number of objections, it is still highly unlikely that examiners will have many grounds to turn down new roads.  In effect the process risks becoming a rubber stamping exercise will little effective scrutiny.
